Greece has three (3) primary barbaric methods of killings domestic animals, (owned/stray) Poisoning, shooting and hanging.

The detection rate (arrest/charge/conviction) of offenders who hang dogs in Greece is lower than the detection rate of offenders who ‘shoot’ dogs in Greece with ‘poisonings’ being the least detected  (arrest /charge /conviction) of offenders, only one offender has been arrested, charged and sentenced in a 2 years period for poisoning an animal.

With the limited detection rates of offenders who hang domestic animals, our research has shown, from the 81 recorded hangings between 16/09/11 and 31/08/14 from a  total of 7 known arrests, only 3 led to a known conviction whilst one accused was acquitted.

With the limited detection rates of offenders which would reveal, nationality, age and motive, the nationality of those offenders who hang domestic animals, like shootings, 99% of the known offenders where of Greek nationality and 99% where male, one 90 year old female abuser
attempted to hang the dog she owned with wire for eating a piece of bread she fed to chickens.

The average age group of offenders arrested is similar to offenders arrested for shootings, offenders arrested for hangings ranged from 57, 61, 65 and 90 year old, indicating hangings, like shootings, is an ‘older generation’ method of killing domestic animals both (owned/stray) and the four of the five known motives for hangings, is equal for the four known motives for shootings, excluding the dog (owned) was killed to ‘teach it a lesson’

1: The dog (owned/stray) killed/ate chickens, offender believed dog was about to attack live stock.
2: The dog (owned/stray) wondered onto private land,(fouling) on that land.
3: The dog (owned) was killed due to a dispute.
4: The dog/cat (owned/stray) was killed as an act of sadism.
5: The dog (owned) was killed to ‘teach it a lesson’

The primary locations of dogs hanged by trees occurred in rural village areas and thus makes the detection rate of offenders (by witnesses) virtually zero.

Only a small percentage of dogs hanged by trees, their breeds where (pointers/hounds) as photographic evidence showed, indicating ‘hunters’ being responsible for hanging their working breed dogs.

The hangings of animals in residential town areas, showed the dogs where hanged from railings, balconies and fences (opposed to trees) these dogs showed to be mixed breed dogs from photographic evidence and where hanged in locations (school yards x2) (100 meters from Police
station) where the public would see their bodies and on the property’s of owners where the animal was hanged due to a dispute with neighbors and the owner would find the body of their pet.

The publicly seen hangings we believe to be carried out by the ‘Sadist’ animal abusers/killers.

One ‘sadist’ case involved a stray dog being hanged inside a scrap car outside a Toyota car factory in Preveza.

Workers at the factory had been feeding the stray dog and found the dog hanged to death one morning when arriving for work, the dog would have been targeted ensuring the factory workers would see the dead body.

A second ‘sadist’ case involved a stray dog in Veria who would walk children to school each morning. The dog was found one morning by parents and the children, hanged from railings, again, the sadist would have targeted that particular dog, ensuring the children would see the
dead body.

And a third example of a ‘sadist’ case was the two dogs hanged on school yard railings, possibly random stray dogs or targeted but the sadist ensured the public and children would see their dead bodies.

Both the statistics on hangings and shootings, showed that at least one known offender in each category had a diagnosed psychiatric illness or was reported as being known to be psychiatrically ill.

The convictions and sentencing of offenders who hang dogs is equal to all animal abusers/killers in Greece ‘ALL’ custodial sentences are ‘suspended’
